Computer sounds like ringtone after being boot, non functional

Hey guys i have a desktop a friend gave that is broken. I know the hdd is good, not sure about the ram or anything else, but it makes this noise upon booting.

You'll have to look up the beep codes for that specific motherboard to find out what the beeps mean, there is a specific combination of beeps to indicate whether it's a RAM, CPU, or motherboard problem. If you can't find out the beep codes, then first, I'd try reseating the RAM and if that doesn't work testing the sticks individually and see if it boots up or not. If that doesn't work and you have some known good RAM that is compatible, try that and see if it works. You can also remove the CMOS battery and leave the system unplugged for a few minutes, that will reset the BIOS to factory defaults and might help if there is a messed up setting that's causing it, though usually beep codes like that indicate some sort of hardware failure.

If you're getting 8 beeps, then there is a problem with the graphics device. If you don't have a video card, then it means the integrated graphics chip on the motherboard is probably fried and you'll have to either replace the motherboard or install a graphics card to handle video output. If you have a graphics card installed, then as it says, try reseating it, and double check that any external power connectors for the card are firmly in place (if it needs them). If that doesn't work, then the graphics card is probably faulty and needs to be replaced.

aha ok, so i could trouble shoot by purchasing a cheap graphics card to see if it will boot? because a motherboard is like 120, half the cost of the desktop...and i rather just sell it for parts if i have to go that route

edit.. LOL nvm im a noob i admit it, ill buy the cheap one from amazon. didnt realize the integrated graphics were on the processor

If you don't have a graphics card lying around, then you could buy something really cheap like GeForce 210 if all you want to do is test if the thing will boot or not, or if you don't intend to do anything graphically intensive with the computer.

hmm well i have a intel 4600 video card in my working computer not sure it would be compatible if i just took it out to see if that made it boot or not, would it work? actually it wouldnt because my working desktop is sandy bridge and the broken one is ivy bridge right? ill just get the cheap one from amazon i guess

It's not a Sandy Bridge CPU, it would be Haswell, so no you can't swap out CPUs to test whether there is a problem with the integrated graphics on the CPU. aha thanks i discovered that. I have a Intel Pentium Dual-Core Processor G2020 which is Sandy bridge right?? Its a very low budget computer

The G2020 is an Ivy Bridge based Pentium, it has a rather weak integrated graphics processor onboard called simply called Intel HD Graphics. If it's not working properly then either there is an issue with the motherboard's display outputs that is causing trouble, or there is a problem with the integrated graphics on the CPU itself. Either way, the cheapest fix would probably be to just buy a low end graphics card if this computer doesn't need to do any graphically intensive work.

The way around that problem is to look for a model that has a switch on it that lets it use Legacy or UEFI BIOS. Legacy mode allows the cards to work if you run into that problem.

So i ran belarc advisor and it says my boot mode is UEFI with successful secure boot

Should i go ahead and get more ram??? i have 4 currently installed. the R7 260x comes tommorow, and i installed a 550 PSU XFX today so i think I will be good to go. thanks alot

More RAM can certainly help, especially if you are running lots of stuff in the background or trying to play the latest and greatest games that can eat up a lot of it. Just keep task manager open in the background and monitor your RAM usage. If it's nearing maximum like 90% or more then you would benefit from more RAM.
