Computer speakers vs. stereo

Hey people,

so, I just bought a new notebook but the sound is not that good and not that powerful as well. As I am building my own work station and for that I'll need some good quality speakers (but I'm not an audiophile).

I've heard a lot about some pc speakers like Bose, B&W, B&O and brands like that but they are way above my budget (I'm not considering spending more than $200 for PC speakers and 250 for stereo systems)

So my question is, should I buy dedicated computer speakers like the Audioengine A2, Creative Gigaworks T40,... or is it better to buy a stereo system of brands like Sony, Onkyo, Pioneer, Yamaha that sit on the same price range?

Is it worth the money spend that much on PC speakers or the sound quality is just about the same if I buy the stereos? I do like the fact that I can listen to radios with the stereo but I was thinking about the sound quality (maybe I'll use the speakers with my TV for watching movies so that would be something to consider as well).

Any suggestions will be very helpful.

Thanks

Its only worth buying anything if it sounds good to YOU! Trouble is you cant always hear what something sounds like until you get it home. I bought a Cambridge Soundworks 5.1 system back in 2000 and am glad I did as the sound output is still better that most modern look alikes. I have it connected to a Creative soundblaster ZX soundcard. No complaints but I am not an audio - holic !! Just like good sound. Even sound through a "normal" TV is rubbish in comparison. Saying all that - my partner uses a laptop with a stereo speaker set up that came with an old Fujitsu siemens XP desktop and the sound is acceptable up to a certain volume. Its all a matter of personal choice though as everyones hearing is different. If possible try to find someone/where to listen to what you want before you buy it. Good Luck
