computer starts up, but I get no video

I have tried ever thing at the sticky, and It isn't working. I can shutoff the computer with my chassis button and all the fans work fine
running windows 8.1

what kind of connection to the monitor? (DVI, HDMI, displayport, etc) Is it connected to onboard or discrete GPU? If discrete, try connecting to onboard and see if you get a video signal.
