For the last couple days my computer has been randomly crashing in a way I have never seen before. Suddenly everything I'm doing will stop functioning, my speakers continue playing sound but extremely distorted and slowly, mouse sometimes is able to move but only once every few seconds. There is no blue screen, nothing in event viewer. Sometimes when I restart my computer after the crash it works fine as if nothing happened, sometimes it does the same thing on startup.

It seems to me to be a hardware issue, but I'm not sure how to figure out what exactly would be causing it. I took the heatsink off my CPU, cleaned it and redid the thermal paste, dusted my computer, turned it back on, and it seems to be working fine for now, but I'm worried it will start happening again.

Any ideas what could be causing this?
