Computer to replace PS3

A friend of mine has a son who wants to replace his PS3 with a computer. I'm wondering what components would give him the same functionality. I know to a certain extent it's apples and oranges but there must be a configuration that would get him close. His budget is $600 and I'm afraid he won't be able to do it for that.

At this point the PS3 is pretty old. A well planed $600 dollar PC can rival even the newest gen of consoles.

This pc can run circles around the ps3.
The ps3 tech is 5 years old.This pc is even better than the ps4.

Thanks for the informative answers. I have always used Intel CPU's as they are superior for Flight Simming, which is my main app. This comp will be used for general gaming like call of duty and skyrim. What would an equivlalent intel CPU and MB be?
