Computer turns on for exactly 5 seconds before shutting off

Seems I'm only here when my PC screws up, 🙁

The fans on my computer spin for roughly 5 seconds before shutting down, the gpu fan stops spinning first, then the one on the cpu, then the case fan.

After this it's only possible to get it to switch on again by using the switch on the back of the power supply after a short time (there seems to be a delay in how quick i can turn it back on)

the power buttons do not work and as soon as i flick the psu switch the pc jumps to life without me touching the power buttons.


Whats wrong with my pc?

Broken cpu maby. Motherboard and graphics should be fine cos u can start without a proper graphicscard and the computer wont even turn on if Mb was broken

One time i diagnosed a similar pc issue and it ended up being bent cpu pins that I bent back and everything worked. Just go through ALL the steps and check EVERYTHING.

It's still good to double check everything is properly connected. I've seen many weird situations where RAM somehow gets unseated and causes issues. The breadboarding link at the bottom should be especially helpful to you and is not aimed specifically at new builds.

The only time I myself have had issues with a computer not fully powering on was when it came down to CPU bent pins, PSU fault or RAM not being seated fully or faulty..

Hey just got done with everything, from what I can tell its neither the PSU as I also tried that in another computer, the GPU as it was still doing it without it plugged in, and the CPU shows no signs of damage i.e burn marks or bent pins.

Leaving the RAM, and potentially the CPU.


I faced this problem a few weeks back but after I dusted it it booted and displayed a screen stating it was reseting to default bios, could this mean it's something to do with the CMOS? Forgive my lac;k of knowledge I haven't a clue when it comes to CMOS.

Nope, my PC doesn't boot enough to get to the screens they're talking about, I was asking if I should clear CMOS and it might help?


I'm all outta ideas here and my hands hurt from putting the computer back together 🙁

You can try resetting the CMOS by pulling out the battery and attempting to boot. Pull out the ram and GPU and make sure you have a motherboard speaker plugged in. When you attempt to boot, do you hear your motherboard speaker beeping more than once?
