Hello there,

I am having a most unusual problem where my system wakes itself from sleep when I walk by.. Sometimes randomly also but most times when I walk over to my desk it will wake by itself for no reason. This is quite annoying and i would greatly appreciate any help in identifying the cause.

Specs:

Intel i7 1366 CPU
Asus Rampage III Extreme
Intel 520 SSD
Corsair PSU
2x EVGA 570 SLI
Coolermaster HAF-X
Logitech G500 Mouse
Logitech G510 Keyboard
Logitech C910 Webcam

No hints from powercfg:

C:\Users\Admin>powercfg -devicequery wake_armed
HID Keyboard Device (011)
HID Keyboard Device (012)

C:\Users\Admin>powercfg -lastwake
Wake History Count - 1
Wake History [0]
Wake Source Count - 0

I have unplugged the LAN and webcam and it still wakes, at first I thought I had a virus that was using it as a bot but when I discovered that it was motion/vibration sensitive I eliminated that possibility.

Thanks!

then, It must be your mouse or keyboard ...

Unless you can trigger a key press on your keyboard by walking by, I'm assuming your mouse is so sensitive that small movement caused by you walking by is enough to trigger it to activate, thus waking up your machine.

Either adjust your "wake-up" settings, get a new mouse, or stop stomping around like a rhino :)

Chances are your mouse just has a really finicky sensor. Some mice will tend to creep along, even when stationary, when placed on certain surfaces. You walking by causes the floor to vibrate, which in turn moves the mouse very slightly, which makes your computer wake up.

Get a different mouse pad and you'll probably be fine.

Have you considered leaving another computer (e.g. a laptop) in the same room to keep your desktop company? It sounds to me like you have a seriously lonely machine.

LOL.

But yeah - my computer "wakes" too when I walk near it. It's because my mouse is so sensitive. However I kind of like the feature...automatic wake up when I walk near it :)

I don't consider myself a heavy guy - but at over 200lb I can usually feel whatever i'm walking on vibrate/creek around me a little bit. lol.

Yes I do need to exercise more.

Edit: I've also seen static do this as well (walk near a computer even on a solid surface and the comp wakes up). Previously my couch was super staticy until I got myself a cotton cover...no more static!

There's definitely the distinct possibility that possession is afoot - I would try excercising your pc 😉

....and try out motorneuron's idea (add companion) - definitely possible also.

And, as a last resort, the mouse disable thing.

I have "Allow the device to wake the computer" disabled under Mice in device manager, that was one of the first things I did...

I will try to disable the keyboard too however I cant imagine there's anything that sensitive in there since I get no random keystrokes due to vibration when the system is on.

And zoot- shutdown works fine, it will stay asleep; but I like to Alt-Tab out of my game and come back later thus that will not work ;(

If it's not the keyboard I'm thinking it may be static which I've had problems with before ( causing the computer to reboot ) but only with cheaper cases...

Is there any way to log the cause of a wake? Other than powercfg -lastwake which is not working in this case?

Thanks!
