Computer will not boot with 8 pin cpu power connected

Long story short I was careless and was adjusting the vrm heatsinks I just bought while the computer was turned on. I know this was stupid of me and the computer turned off. I was adjusting it with pliers. When I hit power the fans spin for about 1 second then the computer fails to turn on. The computer will boot fine if the 8 pin is not connected but it is a black screen. This leads me to believe either the cpu or motherboard is fried. However the cpu fan still spins when the 8 pin is not connected. I don't have another computer to test the cpu in. So my question is do I need to replace my motherboard or cpu? I have already tried to clear CMOS with no luck. Please help me guys. Thanks

Well...can you power your system on with NO CPU installed at all? Does it beep or something? Do you have the motherboard manual to check the beep codes for your motherboard (BIOS)?
Try booting with nothing but motherboard, CPU and RAM and see if you get any image. I would suspect it's the motherboard rather than the CPU.

No the cpu is installed. Also I never even touched the cpu. I was putting single third party heat sinks onto my motherboard vrms. The computer does not power on at all with the 8 pin and 24 pin connected cpu intact. It will only power on if the 24 pin is
connected without the 8 pin cpu still installed. I think the pliers shocked it while I was moving around the vrm heatsink with the computer on. No beeps at all

Damn, well sorry to hear. Just to be sure if you can try your cpu in a friends rig whom might have the same cpu socket as you?
Like 3ogdy said, it's most likely the motherboard though.

If you're lucky, you can maybe RMA (trade in for a new one) the motherboard saying it was already faulty. Just make sure it looks like the condition you found it in. If you're lucky that'll work.

-good luck

But the cpu fan still spins so are you sure it's the motherboard? I don't have another computer to test the cpu. Also with no cpu in at all with just the 24 pin in no 8 pin it doesn't beep

If you go to a pc store, depending on the store they can help you test the cpu or motherboard. If you can't do it yourself.

Unless you can try get a new one to replace it if you're lucky, if you say that it was already fried when you first opened it. If you can't test it then you won't know which one it exactly is, the cpu fan works but perhaps another section of the board is damaged, most likely one of the cpu pins.

You'll have to replace one.

-good luck

Ok so I replaced the motherboard and now it does start with the 8 pin and 24 pin connected. The problem is there is no picture on the display my computer screen just switches between analog/digital and eventually just goes to a black screen. The cpu also got burning hot to the point where my computer would just turn off. This only happened when the cpu fan wasn't on it because I was just testing to see if everything was working okay before i attached my cpu fan. This leads me to believe that I fried the cpu as well somehow. Is that a logical explanation? It doesn't seem normal that a cpu would get that hot, it literally felt like it was BURNING. I was wearing an anti-static wrist band. Please help me guys.

You need the cpu fan and heatsink on, or else the cpu will just heat itself! Also you'll need thermal paste inbetween the cpu and the heat sink.

Also for the screen not appearing have you plugged it into your graphics card or the motherboard display output?

I did attach the heatsink and fan but the same result. Also I plugged it in to my graphics card and using the cpu fan didn't change anything. My motherboard has no dedicated gpu. I tried plugging/unplugging the dvi port from the gpu and it appears to be recognizing it because the screen stalls like it is about to start but it eventually just goes to a black screen. Also even though I tested the computer without the cpu fan the cpu appeared to get way hotter than it should have. This leads me to believe something is wrong. I also tried to start the pc without the cpu intact and the computer did not beep at all. The speaker is definitely in the right spot too. Is it not showing anything because the processor was overclocked in my previous motherboard?

What psu are you using also? what are your full specs?

Also you may be able to RMA your cpu for free for a new one, if you can prove it doesn't work.

Well by the looks of it, the damage seem pretty extensive. I would take it to a pc store, and tell them to test every single component in your pc. e.g. they might put another psu in to test the psu.

It's up to them and they'll test all your parts in their own rigs (IF THEY'RE A GOOD PC STORE)

-good luck.
I can't say much more other than to test yourself each part.
