Computer won't boot with bootable USB

Hi, this is my first post and I hope I'm in the right section. Ok so I have recently built a computer for the first time, everything seemed fine when it turned on and I got to the Bios. I have my USB bootable drive plugged in and it read it a couple of times in the bios but it would tell me to insert a bootable drive or something along that line. Most of the time it doesn't read it And goes to the Uefi shell and won't go past that. I can't find any answer on the internet please help.

in the bios under hard drives the usb stick should show up. set the usb as the first hard drive. save and exit. if there boot files on the usb stick yu get a message hit any key to boot from cd-rom. hit any key and run windows installer. if the usb stick wont boot try using the microsoft iso to usb tool.

also if you download from torrents the windows image try a good known image from digital rivers.

Hi thank you for the quick response, I don't see the section for hard drives my bios looks different from others ones I've seen. Another thing is it doesn't always read that I even have a USB in it. And again I can't find a section for hard drives

what the model of your mb. the asus efi bios on the main page has the boot drive on the bottom of the screen. they boot from order listed from left to right. you just drag and drop the boot drives. in the bios it under the boot tab. for bootable hard drives and cd-roms.

Ok so I got the computer to read the USB again and it gives me this message when I boot from it "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key_" and I press a key and it just keeps saying the message over and over every time I press a key

My motherboard is the msi h81m-p33
If you were talking about getting to the boot order screen I know how to get there and I set the USB to first priority and it does what I just said, reboot with a proper boot device etc

sound like your usb stick is missing the boot block files needed to post. use the microsoft iso to usb tool to make sure you have a bootable iso usb stick.

Anyway that is the tool I used to make the bootable USB and I know it works because it works on my brothers laptop just fine but it just refuses to work on my computer 🙁

in the bios look for secure boot..turn it off. also try setting the bios to boot from legicy devices. sometime efi bios and usb screw up also make sure the usb stick in the black usb 2.0 port.

My USB is in the black 2.0 port and I cannot find secure boot in the bios. It is set to boot from legacy + UEFI. One thing I forgot to mention is the very first time I turned my computer on I didn't have a hard drive and it booted up the windows install stuff but I couldn't install it(cause no hard drive) and it hasn't worked since the first time. I just thought I would add that in in case it gave you any other ideas

Is there a way to maybe make it as if it had never been turned on? Without taking the whole computer apart? Idk maybe it would work

I am having the same issue with my MSI Mobo Z87 G45
First my iso install works I checked it on another laptop.
I have tried installing from usb key making it bootable using windows utility, and also tried to launch install from uefi setting in the BIOS ( used rufus to makes the uefi key)
the mobo either does not recognize the key or when it does I get please select a bootable device and press a key.

I also have tried with a USB external HD , and changed the boot priority to usb hd
and also with data, again set the boot preferences accordingly.

External and sata hd are always detected but I get in both situations insert proper boot device.

There only the optical drive solution I have yet to try , but Im 99 percent sure I would get the same error message, as the installation devices work on my other laptop.

Their is something I need to figure out and it comes from the motherboard .

Crazypants how did you solve this issue?

hi dont know if this will help anyone but i just loaded the default bios setup and then change the boot order to read usb 1st and it is now working

so msi boot is paininthe.ss! Follow the steps:
1-in bios menu(press del) disable secure boot.
2- in bios again, set boot type 'legacy'. Save exit.
3- put bootable usb to black usb port
4- restart, press f11 , in boot menu select your usb
it worked for me, hope works for you too.
