A week ago, my FIOS modem/router lost Internet connectivity. The tech came out and replaced it with an ActionTec MI424wr Revision I router. This was a different model than was installed previously. All of my devices were able to connect to it with the exception of my desktop computer. The following are the troubleshooting steps I've tried in roughly the order I tried them:

1. After initially failing to connect to the new FIOS modem, I succeeded in connecting my desktop wirelessly to my iPhone 6 hotspot.

2. I updated the drivers to my wireless adapter. It is an Alfa Network AWUS036ACH 802.11AC that can establish a connection with both my iPhone and my old FIOS router. After doing this, I still could not establish a connection to the new FIOS router.

3. Thinking the problem was my network adapter - since other devices could access the network fine - I purchased a new USB network adapter. It is an EDUP Wifi Dongle AC600 High Speed Usb Wireless Adapter. I installed the latest available drivers and tried to connect to the cable modem router. Again, no success. After this failed, I removed the EDUP adapter and replaced it with the previously used Alfa Network model.

4. Believing it might be something about the combination between my computer and FIOS modem, I bought a home networking router: a Netgear N300 WIFI router, model number WNR2000v5. I connected my desktop to it via an Ethernet cable to set it up. I made sure it had the latest firmware available and changed the settings to non-default username, passwords and SSIDs. Then, when I tried to connect to it over wireless, I got the same result I did when trying to connect to my cable modem. Seeing as I could not establish a connection between my computer and the Netgear while the two were sitting next to each other, I didn't try connecting the Netgear to the FIOS modem.

The way the connection fails may be important. The network adapter on my computer seems to be resetting. And if I'm persistent enough in trying to connect to a wireless network it doesn't like, it disables itself.

Trying to describe it clearer: I select the network from among those listed under Available Connections. It gives me the opportunity to enter the network security key. After I enter the correct network key, the computer makes a cute noise, momentarily says No Networks found before displaying all the available networks again. Occasionally I see the message "Can't connect because Network Adapter was removed."

Any suggestions or troubleshooting steps would be very much appreciated.

Not sure it is pertinent, but the motherboard is a MSI Z97 PC Mate LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard and I'm running Windows 8.1.

I may have figured it out. Both the ActionTec router and the WNR2000v5 are both older hardware incapable of using the wireless standard IEEE 802.11ac. They're both only capable of the standardsIEEE 802.11b, 802.11g and 802.11n. If I can figure out how to get my adaptors into some sort of compatibility mode, I should be able to make a connection.

I confirmed that my iPhone 6 hotspot is capable of the latest 802.11ac standard so this would explain why it works with it and not the ActionTec or the Netgear.

I'll update this with my results one way or the other.
