So I made it a project of mine today to move my router to my desk where my gaming computer is so I can take advantage of wired Internet, but it's not as simple as it appeared. I've been working on this turd bucket for over 5 hours now and have gotten nowhere, basic rundown on the computer is:

I5 4690k
Asus formula vii
Gtx 980ti
16gb trident X ram

I've been using the wifi module that came the the mobo since I built the computer earlier in 2015 and it still works fine, but the ethernet port won't do anything, I've uninstalled and reinstalled multiple versions of the driver for the built in Intel i218v ethernet adapter, the hardware itself in device manager shows up normal however I get the constant "unidentified network no internet connection" message, I can disable wifi it does nothing, I've uninstalled my antivirus, I've tried different cables, I've tried ipconfig commands, manually entering ip/dns info, drivers from the motherboard support site, drivers from the Intel support site, Windows 10 drivers, Windows 8.1 drivers, powering everything off and on, disconnecting power to the tower for a period of time, checked every network setting ninety thousand times, poking it with a stick, swearing at it, buying it dinner, etc, etc, etc. Nothing has made even the slightest bit of difference. When I check my network info the IP address it comes up with it nowhere near a proper ip for my router (actiontec v2000h router/modem from Telus) the subnet mask is wrong and gateway is empty, it literally seems like it has no idea if it's hooked up to a router or a ham sandwich. Any chance anybody has any other things for me to try before I give up? I love building computers but when a guy blows all this money to build a nice gaming rig and it can't do something as simple as go on the Internet when you plug in an ethernet cord it's a little bit of a downer... Oh and the ethernet ports do work on the router, I had me and my wife's ps4's plugged into it before I moved it to my computer.

did you manually set the IP, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS on the adaptor? did that work?

only other think I can think of is to change environments.
I would boot to a linux thumb drive and see if the ethernet port itself is functioning.
puppy linux is small and quick. download the ISO, use rufus to extract it to the USB and boot to puppy. check the ports functionality. if puppy can't use it it's probably dead. if puppy gets online and works then the problem is in the software somewhere.

That is because, it means what it says Unidentified network.

It means windows does not have the network information.
Not categorized with a current network profile.

Simply.

Click on start.
Control panel.
Network and Internet.
Network and sharing center.

You have two choices.
where it says view your active networks.
The network number should display. Network, Network 1, Network 2.
Bellow it, should be the type of network in blue writing.
Click on it.
And set it to home network.
Apply or click ok.

Or select the setup a new network connection.
selecting the type of network Home, or private.
Follow the setup and click apply or ok when done.

Windows need to associate a connection.
And the type of network Ie : Home.

It does this, then obtains all of the information from your router providing you have DHCP mode set in your modem router and it is enabled. And also Upnp mode in the router settings also. Router=Gateway.

If you have DHCP disabled in your Mode/ Router you will have to access it and obtain the IP pool range
The gateway.
The sub net settings and create a static setting in. your adapters advanced settings, by manual input of all the values.
making sure that the ip you choose is not in use by another device connected to the same router.

After all of the changes restart your system.

Yes I've went onto my router homepage to get the info and manually set everything, didn't do anything.

I tried to change the network to a private network, it's not blue and I can't click on it, I tried setting up a new network, the only option I have is a password protected broadband setup which this isn't, the system wouldn't let me change anything in regards to the network location, I even found a tutorial on installing and using gpedit to change the network policy for unidentified networks and make them private, it did absolutely nothing.
