Computer wont display anything anymore

I've had these parts since March and that's when i built my computer so they aren't very old - ever since i had them there has been weird things going on with it such as graphics card fans not spinning until the operating system is loaded, or my computer won't turn on after it has just been turned off, you'd have to wait 5 minutes and it'll turn on again. However, before I left my house for the summer my computer was working perfectly fine. when I got back it stopped working. the fans spin and the LEDs turn on however the GPU fans DO NOT spin and the on-board graphics arent working. i figured its a BIOS problem but i cant change them if there is no display. I tried resetting them to default by taking out the CMOS battery but that didn't help. I tried using two different monitors, DVI HDMI and VGA, so it couldn't be a monitor problem. Im thinking either its the BIOS or maybe the CPU for whatever reason. Any suggestions? Also note that i am new to forums this is my first post.

GPU: SAPPHIRE NITRO Radeon RX 480 8 GB
CPU: i7-4790K
Motherboard: MSI Z97 GAMING 7 ATX Motherboard
RAM: 2 x 8GB DDR3
PSU: Corsair CX750M 750W

Long shot, but try booting from the CD/USB that you installed your OS with. My friend had a similar issue where he couldn't even get into the BIOS. We would have tried booting to the OS but he lost it. (he's not very bright) Anyways we popped in a new hard drive and installed a new OS and it worked perfectly.

He actually gave the computer to me because he thought he corrupted his BIOS and needed a new MB, which he wasn't willing to do, but he gave it to me and I figured out that his SSD failed. So he couldn't even get into the BIOS. That might be worth a shot too. It's highly unlikely your components just stopped working when they were working before being but away.

Long story short that's how I got my first custom PC for $150.

I don't think this would work in my case since nothing is being displayed when my computer is turned on, not even the MSI boot screen, my display continues to say "No Signal". When i do turn on my computer i can hear my hard drive turn on and start spinning if that means anything. i do however have another hard drive in my computer that is not hooked up with windows 7 in it, but i doubt it'll fix the problem as tried one time before and did nothing. really appreciate the suggestion though.

another thing to note is that when i take my GPU out, the heat pipes or whatever those tubes on the bottom side are called are pretty warm. So i am assuming my GPU works but isn't...? leading me to believe that it is a motherboard problem. if anybody can confirm and give suggestions if it could be fixed that would be greatly appreciated. i cant afford to buy another motherboard i'm only 15.

So it's been a while I'm assuming you haven't even tried my suggestion....

That's fine because I just noticed you have a 4790k with a Z170 board..... those two components are incompatible with each other....

I'm not sure how you got it to work with those specs at all

But it's highly likely that is the source of your problem.

I suggest you figure out if that's actually what you have, and if it is, get either the appropriate board or an appropriate CPU.

If those ARE the specs you actually have, whoever suggested that combo to you is an idiot.... since that board is an LGA 1151 socket and the 4790k is an LGA 1150 CPU.

If those specs are incorrect I still suggest you try the drive and either try booting up from the USB (usually default primary boot location unless you changed it, in which case you're out of luck) or try getting a really cheap HDD for the time being and try a fresh install of the OS...

And if you would have bothered to read my post instead of just saying it wouldn't work you might have solved this by now....

Like I said I had the EXACT same problem as you(except my components were compatible). It was about a year ago before I upgraded the rig I had to the one I have now and that fixed it. Perfectly good computer where the OS drive failed. No boot, no post, no BIOS, no nothing.

One last thing.... the GPU is not an issue.....

That card idles (meaning on but doing nothing) around 45-55C from what I have read.... AKA 113-131F... so yeah pretty freaking warm on idle.... so that's not any issue at all. Also it has stop-fan technology which means the fans are off until it is no longer idle, also not an issue.

It's definitely a hardware issue since there is no post. That means if its not the drive, its either the CPU or the MB, since the card is acting as it should I doubt the PSU is to blame though that is also a possibility.

I really suggest taking my advice and trying out booting from the USB/CD, or buying a cheap HDD until you can afford a better one. The other option is spending MUCH more on another CPU/MB.

Appreciate the reply again, I got the specifications wrong i updated it, im positive my motherboard is compatible with my CPU as i was using it before i left, I did get curious and try to use your solution but it did not work, i tried booting from a Windows 10 USB (From Microsoft) and it did not work, same with windows 10 and 7 DVD's. I have no idea what it is, ive been looking for someone with the same issue everywhere and cannot find it. Yesterday i took all my parts out and reassembled and still the same issue. Sorry about my mistake.

If you did both of those.... I would try replacing the HDD then... It's a much cheaper check than replacing either the MB or the CPU. If that fails. I would take the PSU to a computer repair shop and have them test it.

Either of those will be MUCH cheaper than replacing that MB or CPU. You might as well eliminate the cheaper options first.

Actually you could probably take the whole thing to a repair shop and they should also be able to tell you if your CPU is bad too.

Another thing that you could try is swapping the RAM sticks in their ports. That's an extremely long shot since you really should at least get a display for a RAM issue... but worth a shot I guess...


WCS... your BIOS is corrupted or your CPU is fried.... lets cross our fingers and hope replacing the HDD or the PSU works first.

Last thing... You said the onboard graphics weren't working... did you take out the GPU completely to test that or was the GPU still in?

Thanks EpIckFa1LJoN for your help and suggestions but i found out the issue was my Motherboard i found my old motherboard and put it in along with the same parts and it works perfectly fine now, so it was either the MB or CPU however i doubt it was the CPU that MB always had issues.. The only thing is that now i have to use an AMD FX 8350 instead of the i7 but i may get a cheaper board soon... . Again, thank you so much for the help.

I bought it with Windows 8 preinstalled (no CDs) then upgraded OTA to Windows 10. That wouldn’t help.

If you're having a similar issue I would open a post and ask there. If you bought a pre-built there is a whole host of things that could be wrong with your system.

A lot of extra information is needed. If you have a pre-built then we need the model number and the specs (since manufacturers always have several variations of the same model #)
