Computer won't Hibernate

For the past year or two, at night, I put my computer into hibernate to save power and whatnot. Recently, as in the past week or so, whenever I put the computer into Hibernate, it comes back on in a few minutes, around 5 or so I'd say. (I have Hibernate set to the power button, but it also does the same thing if I do it through the start menu.)

I read USBs can have a factor, so I unplugged everything and went to work today. Came home, it was out of Hibernation. Tried unplugging the speakers as well, still the same thing. What else could the culprit be, and what can I do to fix it? I haven't added any new hardware since around April, when I got a new GPU.

Thanks.

Solution

OK, well first (to rule this out), follow these instructions:

1. Goto 'Device Manager'
Press start, right click on computer and press 'Manage' then press the device manager on the list on the left side

2. Once you're in the 'device manager' section, find 'Network Adapaters', press the arrow to open the scroll down window

3. Find your PCI adapater / USB adapter, (the linkys one) should be easy to find, right click it and press 'properties'

4...
The most common cause I've found is a USB driver. A Microsoft update may have overwritten a driver that doesn't exactly match your system. Try updating your drivers from the manufacturer's site. Other than that, look at what services are going on in the background. Skype and Lync can prevent it was well.

Wireless connection, with a USB piece from linksys. I've had it for a little under a year.

4. Look through the different tabs there should be something in there that says something along the lines of "Allow this device to wake the computer up from sleep state" or something like that. If it is checked then unselect it.

Post back once you have done this!

Thanks :)

Solution

Did it, that option is unchecked already. (Actually blanked out at that.)

OK, next I want to do this...

- Open up a command prompt window (as administrator) and type the following command in the script window...

chkdsk /f

then press enter,

This will fix any problems with your OS, (to rule this out as a possible cause)

Also, you marked my answer as 'Question answered'

Is your issue already resolved?

Thanks,

Hope I helped!

I checked it as answered by accident, when I opened up the email the buttons to reply and select as best answer are right next to each other. I do this every time, you'd think I'd learn.
Anyway, I ran the chkdsk. I'm going to play Dota with a friend for a bit, I'll get back to you later if it worked. Thanks for your help 😀

Ahahha, Dota. Used to play that game have over 3000 hours recorded!

Anyway, glad I can help. I'm going to bed now anyway but will be able to answer your questions or what from probobly 9am tomorrow morning.

Also, I would recommend using the sleep option rather than the hibernate option. Hibernation takes up a lot of storage space on your HDD, I will speak to you more about this tomorrow. Good night!

Hope to speak soon!

Thanks! :bounce::pt1cable:

Starting a new comment thread because that was such a long one. The chkdsk didn't work, it ran, but it still came back on. Anything else it could be? This is getting annoying.

Run the computer in Safe mode for a day, do the usual...

Hibernate your PC and everything, go out and when you come back see if it has turned it's self on. This will help me to rule out a driver issue. The hibernation issue will probably be fixed when you run safe mode. Just try that.

If you need any help with getting onto safe mode. Here is what you do...

1. Restart your computer, repeatedly press F8 until you see a list of options.

2. Select the Safe mode option, you can select safe mode, safe mode with networking or safe mode with command prompt.

If you want to use the internet for a while while running your computer then choose safe mode with networking. I recommend that you first run the computer in normal safe mode (without networking) and then try with networking.

Then I can rule out that it's your internet connection still sending data or receiving data and so turns on the computer.

Any more questions you know what to do.

Thanks,

Just saw your reply. I have been led to believe it is a program triggering it, and I have been having Skype problems lately. It probably is that program in particular. Thanks

So, I booted into Safe Mode, but couldn't find an option to go into Hibernation, so I searched through the control panel. I found an option of, "Allow program timers to wake computer" or something like that. It was enabled, so I disabled it. Turned it back on the normal way, now it Hibernates just fine. My gut was saying it was AVG that had been the program causing problems, just because it annoys me really, but one of the first replies I just saw said it could be skype. I'm going to uninstall it, enable the option, and try again.
