Ok so my computer is this:

amd 64 3700
asus a8n-e
windows xp sp2

I was using it fine a few minute ago then while i was using winamp i accidently hit the shortcut key to log me off windows - when i tried to go back in by clicking my name it thought about it for a few seconds then gave me a blue screen maybe 3 or 4 lines of writing with a number at the start.

The thing is it disappears really quickly so I can't tell what it's saying.

I went to the boot menu thing and tried safe-mode and starting windows with last good config but nothing is working. It still gives me the writing and blue screen no matter what I do.

I've unplugged it as well to give it a cold boot but nothing is happening.

Does anyone know what the blue screen might be saying to me or anyway to fix this?

Is it software or something much worse?

Thanks in advance

do you have your windows xp reinstillation disk? if so, use the second R (repair) option, and it will search for a previous version of windows installed, if it finds yours then all your info will be saved thats on your hard drive. if it does not see that, then it will be like installing a new operating system.

Ok so i PRESSED R When it booted from cd and it went to the c:windows prompt

i did chkdsk /p /r and it did about 33% then decided not to do any more and told me there was 1 or more unreadable problems or something

then i did fixboot and it did it dead quick and told me it was successful and the same with fixmbr

i typed exit and tried to boot windows but it's still doing it.

I have done all that in the right order? what else can I do I'm really at a loss here 🙁

Can you get into safe mode by pressing F8. Before going into safe mode select Disable automatic restart on error. Then let it boot to normal and get the error code. Let us know what happens. Also post your system specs.

I can't get into safe mode ive told it to go into it but it gives me the same error then restarts.

where exactly do i turn off the restart on error?

so the unrecoverable error thing sounds like a broken hard drive?

i can't just do a reformat to fix it?

what other info do you need to know about my computeR?

No... but the fact that chddsk quit at 33% with an unreadable sector error tells me something is up with your hard drive. Since you can't get into Windows to disable the "Automatically Restart" option for system errors, it's difficult to tell exactly what's going on with that blue screen.

If there is no valuable data on the drive, you can get a utility to write zeros to the entire drive and then format it once that procedure is complete. This should tell you for sure whether or not your drive is failing.

What Zoron said...

I might add though that the problem COULD be your MB. A failing IDE channel can act like that as well. I point that out because it looks like you have a newish MB, and it could be bad.
