Hey there,

I just bought a couple of parts to upgrade my PC (GTX 970 and Samsung SSD) and after chucking them in my windows installation seemed to be corrupted.
I booted the system with a flash drive holding the windows disk and after loading in it bluescreened.
I tried this again two more times with the same results.

On the next attempt however it won't boot. I have checked all components were seated properly, removed the 970 and put the old Gcard back in, swapped the RAM in it's slots, removed the SSD and tried with only the SSD and checked all the cables to no avail.

What the hell could be going wrong? I have a feeling it may be the PSU.

- System Hardware -
CPU: Intel 3770K
MoBo: Asus P8z77-m
RAM: Ripjaws 8gb 2133
PSU: Cooler Master GX 750w
Gcard: EVGA GTX 970 FTW
SSD: Samsung 840EVO
HDD: 1TB Toshiba

Solution
So what makes you think the mobo is getting power if nothing spins?

CPU fan and GPU fan/s get power directly from the motherboard - if they don't spin then mobo is not getting power.
If you see your USB mouse or keyboard light up thats because they run on 5v power while the PSU is in sleep mode.

Check the 24pin psu connector and 4/8pin CPU power connector. Also check the case power button connector. If it doesn't work then try turning the PC on manually using the tip of a screwdriver briefly shorting the 2 pwrON pins on the mobo.

What could be wrong:

Dead or dying PSU - most likely
Dead Case Power buton
Loose power cables - 24ping and cpu 8pin
Short somewhere in the PC - PSU protection turns on and PC start - in this case you...

Sorry I forgot a few details, the mobo is getting power but the computer won't power on, fans don't spin, no image on screen.

Short somewhere in the PC - PSU protection turns on and PC start - in this case you should see fans trying to spin for a fraction of a second when you turn on the PC
PSU protection triggered causing PC not to start - Turn off the PSU from the back on/off button and unplug it from the wall socket for about 10-15mins - try again - it should work

Solution

Thanks, I'll give it a go. The reason I think it's getting power is because the mobo has a light on it and a couple of test lights that only function when it is powered but I tried shorting the pwrON pins and nothing so I can only assume that it is a PSU issue and won't know without testing the PSU. I can get it tested locally so I'll get back to you but I'm pretty sure you're right on this one.
Thanks for the help.
