Computer won't start/CPU light on/Burning Smell

A few weeks ago, I moved to a new apartment and brought my desktop with me. I started to notice that sometimes when I start my computer, all of the lights and fans on the tower come on, but nothing is sent to the display. The CPU LED lights up on my motherboard, and my keyboard and mouse don't light up like normal. This happens probably every other time I start the computer or so. It's very random.

When the computer does start correctly, it sometimes displays the message "Overclock fail!" When I saw this, I went into the settings and turned off all of the overclocking settings, but I still received this message once more in the future. My computer is still not starting like this about as often, but I don't receive that message anymore upon successful boot up.

Now, I have a new problem as well. Yesterday, I've started to smell a burning smell coming from this room. It seems to only happen when the computer is on. It's not a constant smell; I only get slight wisps of it. I've tried smelling all around the computer, including the motherboard, CPU, and PSU, and I can't seem to locate the smell at all.

Is there anything that might be the cause of both of these issues?

I'll also add that I got a new monitor during the move as well, and I've only been testing on the new monitor. It's an ASUS VG248QE LED Monitor.

Hard to pinpoint w/o actually being there. But if you had been OC'ing the CPU, I would suspect either the VRMs, or some other component that gets hot on the board like the chipsets. Or possibly the PSU. Or even your new monitor emitting the "new smell" which can sometimes smell like burning bakelite.

You're going to have to wait until it does it again and then immediately start sniffing around the PC and the monitor.

Btw, what motherboard do you have? It is designed for OC'ing, right?

Sorry, totally forgot the motherboard. It's a Gryphon Z97.

Even if it's just the monitor (which is definitely a possibility, I'll make sure to smell around it the next time it happens), I'm still concerned about the CPU light turning on upon startup. Is there any way to test what might be causing that?

If it just blinks on/off during startup, that is simply the POST doing its thing. If it stays on, there's a problem.

If it just blinks on/off during startup, that is simply the POST doing its thing. If it stays on, there's a problem.

When the computer fails to start, which is probably half of the time, the light does stay on.

Yeah, that's not right. That coupled with the OC Fail warning and the smell would indicate there is something wrong. Poor OC'ing techniques can be hazardous to the health of one's components. Did you maybe overdo the voltage or something?
