A PC I built exactly a year ago isn't starting all of a sudden a week after I last used it and I'm wondering what the problem is.
The computer:
Intel i7 4770
Gigabyte z87x-ud5h
G.Skill ripjaws X (2 x 8 gb)
Corsair TX 650 Watt power supply (This part is older - about 6 years, from an old build)
(Then there's 2 graphics cards and several other PCIe cards, but those seem to be unrelated)
To be more specific about the problem: pressing the power button on the case or on the motherboard does nothing (no fans, leds, etc start at all). The led behind the power button on the motherboard is blinking.
I broke down the machine and removed all the components, thinking I should test the power supply first. I did the paper clip test on that with only one system fan plugged in and it powered up just fine.
Next, I put the power supply back in and set it up so I had nothing plugged in to the motherboard but one stick of ram, the CPU, and the power supply - at this point the motherboard LED went solid and the machine would turn on.
Now, if I plug anything else in to the motherboard I get the blinking light again and it won't start at all. When I say anything I mean one more stick of ram, a hard drive, or even just a connector to usb ports on the case will trigger the problem.
So, I'm wondering if the PSU is dying and can only power a minimal load at this point, or if there is something wrong with the mother board... Is there some way for me to test this?
I'm also completely in the dark as to what might have caused the problem (unless it's just random age related failure). The one thing that comes to mind (and maybe this will clue someone else in to the problem) is that the motherboard has these charging USB ports that will power/charge a device even when the machine is off. I accidentally left an external drive plugged in to one of these when I was gone for the past week - maybe this is related...?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
