My Windows 7 computer won't turn on. The power switch had been acting weird recently. Sometimes I had to push it a few times before it powered up. Now it does nothing. I have tried the power button on my ASRock 970 Extreme4 motherboard, but nothing. It is getting power because I can still charge devices through the USB ports. I have an EVGA 400W power supply. It does not have a switch. I built the computer a year and a half ago.

Any tips on how to go about troubleshooting that don't require tearing apart the computer? I'm thinking about buying a power supply tester for about $15 on Amazon.

Solution

So i use windows 7 also, I have a similar problem but it...
you can test it yourself! just use a metal paperclip. You can look it up, so you know what 2 leads to connect. I used a paperclip on my last PSU to see if it was dead when my computer wouldn't turn on. Apart from that Remove the ram and GPU and see if it boots. Don't forget to Clear the Cmos.

Since my PSU has no power switch, will this test still work? Thanks.

Yes, But when you are putting the Paperclip in your psu. Make sure it isnt pluged into the wall and DON"T TOUCH THE PAPER CLIP while the PSU is on. Your PSU should have a 20/24 pin connector. All you do is connect the green and the black wire that is next to it, This trick it to think its pluged into the Motherboard. If the Fan Runs, Your PSU is Fine.

But look up a video to make sure you are doing it right, I don't want you to mess up your PSU if you Do it wrong.

I reset the CMOS and unplugged the computer overnight. The next day it booted up just fine, but the power button was still cranky. I turned it off and on tested it four or five times. A few times I had to push the power buttom two or three times before it powered up.

This whole thing began when I couldn't bring it out of sleep mode. When I couldn't, I realized the computer had gone dead, and that's when I realized I couldn't even turn it on.

It's making me think it might have been something to do with a sleep mode software glitch. I don't know.

Thanks for all your help. Any ideas what might be going on?

What Operating System are you using?

windows 7

So i use windows 7 also, I have a similar problem but it does the opposite. I can't get my computer to stay in asleep. It wakes up after about 1 minute and then it get mad and goes to sleep and wakes up over and over again.

This could very well be a windows 7 problem or another Application on the computer forcing it to do this.

I am sorry i couldn't help much, You could try to install Linux on a USB device and boot up to that and put your computer to sleep and see if its an OS problem.
