I don't know which category this question belongs to, so feel free to take it down if I mistaken.
Long story short, it's a handed-down PC from a friend of my dad. All is there except HDD of course, and I installed a new one, with a fresh OS. Everything was going fine, I used it for a week or so, and then this freezing problems occurred. The owner never told me the state of the PC when he gave it to me, so I don't know if this problem had been there before or I just effed it up.

PC Specifications:

  • Motherboard: Asus M3N78
    PSU: Asus EXDA40RC0 450W
    GPU: Asus EN9600GT
    RAM: 2 x Kingston DDR2 2GB
    Processor: AMD Athlon X2
HDD: WD Blue 2TB (brand new)
    OS: Windows 7 Pro x64

Problem:
Random freezing when using PC. Time ranges from hours after boot to seconds from turning on. Shortest freezing noted at POST message during memory check. Never encountered BSOD screen. Sometimes the screen stays black (fixed by reseating RAM).

Various troubleshooting and tests I've done:

  • -Reinstalled Windows. freezing persists.
-Ran Windows on safe mode. Freezes moments after logon. On other occasion, it freezes during loading files.
    -Ran startup repair. freezing persists.
-Ran CHKDSK on boot. freezes on stage 2.
-Ran CHKDSK after logon. Passed all stages without any error found. (then freezes after some time)
-Ran Memtest 5 times consecutively. No errors found. Freezing persists.
-Reseated everything from GPU to RAM + hard reset. freezing persists

I want to know if this PC is already FUBAR and I have to get a new one, or is this is only a piece of hardware problem and I could replace the defective parts. I'm open to suggestion and testing, but right now it's only limited to BIOS and boot configuration since I can no longer login into windows.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Sir,I am Bharath from India.I think I can help you out here

1) Download and Install Advanced System Care 7.4 Free

2) Make it PRO (Check in Youtube for How to make it Pro)

3) Select all Options and Start Scanning for Issues

4) It will defenitly find some Issues and Tap "Fix"

5) It will fix everything up.

Fix 2

1) Download and Install Driver Booster 1.5

2) Make it into PRO (Go to youtube and see How to)

3) Scan for Outdated Drivers

4) It will show every Outdated Driver

5) Download and Install Outdated Drivers (Just click "Update")

And after all these fixes,Try restarting your PC.Hope this works for you.

If the Problem still Persists,Please see my Tutorial - http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/2311852/last-read

Please inform me the Result of all these.Thank you

As I stated in my previous post (in case if you missed it), I currently cannot login into Windows. It means I cannot install anything. Also, I checked the software you mentioned and I got some fairly bad reviews for it, so I don't think I want that kinds of stuffs on my system. Sorry.

I suspect is a physical issue such as the graphics chipset or the processor as well, it happened the same to my old athlon x2, only way to determine it is to try the processor on a different working motherboard, and check how it behaves, but it can also rely on the internal graphics chipset (motherboard) that could be causing the freezing. Is there a way you can borrow a discrete graphics card to check if it's the graphics chipset?

EDIT: Didn't see you had a GPU already, have you tried taking out the graphics card out of the case and use the vga output from the motherboard?

Right, I did what you told me. I took out the graphic card and use the motherboard VGA port. I got was black screen at first, but then I managed to get displays after reseating the RAM. So I logged onto windows, It was fine, but then this happened. http://puu.sh/bNrLl/1a8f020b07.jpg
Sorry for the crappy photo, phone camera lens is cracked.
I restarted the system, but then freezes on the loading files screen. Running startup repair also freezes this.
Well crap, now I got the "A disk read error occurred, Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart"
I may need to get a new drive though.

Solution
As much as I want to do that, I can't. Where will I find the rig compatible for my processor? I rather build a new one than looking for different parts all over the place. It's a handed down computer anyway, but I'll run a few other test before I decided to build a new rig.
I'm just trying to fix my drive now with DLDIAG, and then just switch a few memory test.
