I plan on placing on order tonight (will have to wait till tommorrow if I don't get some good responses, so help me out tonight! 😀 ) and I wanted to make sure it was a solid setup before I submit it.
The list
1. ABIT IP35 Pro LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813127030
- I want to be able to use this board to OC my future penryn through the roof

2. Intel Dual-Core E2140 Allendale 1.6GHz 1MB L2
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116037
- I want this to keep my mobo company for a month or two till I get my new cpu, plus it should be fun to practicing OC'ing on

3. OCZ Reaper HPC Edition 2GB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227231
- I want this to be cheap but still support OC'ing

So...thumbs up?

They are all solid choices... however, if you are looking at penryn you maybe best with an x38 board... You shouldnt really need to worry about overclocking the RAM if you get a 1333FSB penryn.

If you get a Q9450 at 1333fsb... clock is 333mhz
This will use 667 ddr2 at stock 1:1
to use the 800 ddr2 at 1:1 you would be taking the cpu clock to 400mhz.
Setting the multiplier to the highest possible on the Q9450 would give you an final speed of 3.2ghz.

If you want to try for higher than this i would suggest some 1066 DDR2 as this will mean you dont have to worry about another unknown in OCing the RAM... 1066 would give you 533mhz at 1:1 which means ~4.2ghz would be limit before overclocking ram... at those clocks you want some SERIOUS cooling, and thats if the CPU will handle

Sigh...so I'll now be changing 2 out of my 3 items....
new contenders:
CORSAIR Dominator 2GB (2 x 1GB)

ASUS P5E LGA 775 Intel X38
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131219

My main concern with these two items is physical. They say massive heatsinks can be a problem and I already have a zalmann 9700 waiting to go on. I think the zalmann is proportioned to where it could fit, but that's just guestimating by looking at pictures, so if someone could clarify this I'd appreciate it

(Also thank you for the reply)

New combo is decent. You can do a search on zalman at newegg's user comments & see if it fits. I think it will. I used to have the 9700 & it didn't hinder any ram on the Intel platform. On the AMD platform, it MAY be a problem cuz the cpu socket & ram slots are way too close on some AM2 boards.

Hm...hard to choose between the 2 rams, I might end up going with that crucial so I don't have to deal with the MIR, but they don't have the huge heatsinks of the Dominator's, which I would kind've like to have so I can sleep better at night 😛
