Is there a way i can determine with 100% CONFIDENCE that the shop has sold me a athlon 1200 C and not anything else...

WITHOUT removing the heatsink?

i.e. software solution please.
p.s. all of its multipliers are unlocked. Either it was made that way, or the shop sold me an overclocked 1000 or something.

Getting more suspicious of my chip... is it really a 1200C.
remember i got it with multipliers unlocked.
used a fariety of chip I.D. programs
1. wcpuid
2. myCPU
3. cpu-z-103
the results obtained were...
Processor: AMD athlon (Model 4)
Platform: soceket A (pga462 socket)
Vendor: authentic amd
Family: 6 {7} extended, model: 4 stepping ID: 2 type: 0 (original OEM)
internal clock: 1208.74
system bus: 268.61 ddr
system clock: 134.3
multiplier 9.0
L1 cache 64K 2way set associative
L2 cache 256K 16way set associative bus width 64bits
L2 speed full (1208.74)
Supported: MMX MMX+ 3DNow! 3DNow+
NOT supported: SSE SSE2
AGP 1x 2x 4x
fast writes supported

cpu-z-103 returned this additional info...
core stepping: A4
technology: 0.18u
core voltage 1.81 v
and down the bottom of the main page is:
Original CPU/FSB Clocks: 900/100 (DDR)
???????
does this mean i have a highly overclocked 900? or was that just the first model of thundabird released???

help much appreciated.
if these guys have done a shady deal i want to nail them to the wall!

No 100% guarantee that I know of. However, it seems the cpu has a default 9x multiplier. Its pretty safe to assume its a 1200C. Old 900 Mhz Athlons werent the best overclockers. Few would reach 1+ Ghz.

How high can you get it ? If it does 1.3+ rest assured its a 1.2.

My 1200c goes up to 1.46 without any problems and only one voltage jump 1.8v, havn't tried FSB uping but I believe I should be able to get 1.5ghz out of it. Currently running at 1.4ghz stable as can be at 1.78volts. Temp is 40c unloaded with system temp of 26c. Fully loaded cpu temp goes up to around 45c with sys of 26c.

Clocking to 1.46 or 1.5 is not a verification that he's got a 1200c. My 1200c can post and boot and run (for an hour or 2?) at 1400...but forget stability! I want rock solid stability. And that means running dozens of different programs at full load for 12 hour min. I can get 98% stability at 1333 but for 100% it's
got to be at the prescribed 1200. Your CPU might run at 1500, but then why didn't AMD label it at 1333 ??? Because if yours is 100% stable at that speed and they didn't label it 1333, then AMD dropped the ball.

I've have run mine at 1.4ghz for days without any problems. Sometimes other factors contribute to stability as in good memory. Havn't tried 100% cpu usage for 12 hours and that would be a good test for stability. I usually keep my FSB within spec just for that reason, stability. I really havn't run at 1.46 for a long period of time, it was around 2 hours playing QuakeIII and I had no problems there.

Sorry I don't know of any software that can tell you. I think software just reports what settings the system is currently using. But there are way smarter people here than me, so maybe they can correct me on that.

Like I said, all the 1200+ CPUs are unlocked, so don't sweat that. I saw a whole tray of them at the last computer show. The vendor who I always talk to told me they are all unlocked.

And my default bios bootup is also (9)100, so don't sweat that either.

And if your CPU doesn't reliably run at 1400, don't think you were ripped off....because neither does mine...and I'm not worried because these guys are pulling your leg about running 100% stable at 1500.

My 1200C Axia is just that. I always read the die to make sure.

What temperture are you running on your 1200c? So far my 1200c has been very stable at 1.4ghz. Ran at 1.33ghz for about 2 weeks without any major problems. Now running at 1.4ghz, had one lock up playing QuakeIII but then I was overclocking my Radeon to its max as well, restored Radeon clock to stock and my computer hasn't frooze or had any gliches since. I will have a better idea in a couple of weeks running at 1.4ghz.

42C absolute MAX load (27-30c idle) @1200 (9x133)
It jumps quite a bit if I overclock at 1400 @ 1.82Vcore
...last I checked at that speed and Vcore, it maxed at 51C.
(I've played with just about every permutation of FSB as well)

BTW, I left it at 1333 (10)133 1.78 Vcore....Even though I might get an occational lock up. (Max temp was 46C)

That sounds good, now what power supply do you have? I have a 400w PowMax. With a 250w PowMax I had problems with a 866 T-Bird (650@886) until I upgraded my Power Supply. Prior to the upgrade my system was buggy, afterwards it became fairly stable.

I learned my PSU lessons back when Athlon and Geforce (.25 micron) came out.
My "PRIMARY" PSU is rated for 300w but I can't give you exact specs or make until I get home tonight. And my secondary PSU (for the backup fans) is a high quality 250w

You can see my hardware projects at:
http://bogartbunch.homestead.com/hardware.html

Cooling page:
http://bogartBunch.homestead.com/cooling.html

Secondary PSU setup:
http://bogartBunch.homestead.com/cooling2.html

BTW, I have a really good HSF and backup fans so my temps don't reflect stock HSF.
I don't recommend anyone with stock HSF setup compare my temps to their own, especially when overclocking.

Well as a bit of an update i Do have 2 x 256mb PC150 Kingmax
and it rocks

got my system sitting at 8 x 150 = 1200 :)
temps (depending on where u look are...)
bios = 54 idle
asus probe = 65 idle
i have a FOP32-1 and yes, i suspect the heatsink isnt on quite right/ not enough thermal gunk.
also, the case wasnt supplied with any fans beside the one on the power supply, so internal temps get up as well. (board temp reaches 30-35 in bios)

but thanks aff for the help.much appreciated.
temps for me at the moment are ok, its winter here downunder. as summer gets around and ive earnt some more cash maybe ill invest in a few case fans and a silverado.

must run.. i have to find out if i can push my PC150 kingmax up to 166! :)

Well I concluded that I was just luckier and got a more overclockable 1200c. If the processor performs as rated then I can't ask to much more out of it but I am pretty happy about my CPU being able to overclock as good as it does.

Thats cool, now just cool the T-Bird a little better and I bet you will be able to overclock more. Easiest way to keep the case cool while waiting to get extra case cooling fans is to leave it open. Plus in the summer time direct an air conditioning duct to your case using a flexible hose like a dryer hose, great cooling and is virtually free.
