Question Confused about nvme and sata m.2's

Hi I'm new to m.2 storage.
I have an Asus Strix 390e mobo with 2 m.2 slots. I bought a 1tb 970 Evo nvme m.2 but I am also wanting to buy an 860 Evo m.2 2tb but noticed the ports only have one notch and the 860 looks like it needs a 2 notch port. Is it still compatible? Sorry I'm new to me.2's

Both will work.

The 860 uses sata and the 970 uses nvme. The nvme is faster, but both are compatable.
