Confused about where to put memory sticks

Currently have two 256MB memory sticks for a total of 512MB installed in my eMachines T6212 computer. I would like to upgrade to 4GB of memory. What is the easiest and east expensive way to do this and what order do I place the new memory sticks in the 4 sockets on the motherboard?

What leads you to believe that the motherboard will accept 4GB?
Further, why are you pouring money into a PC that was obsolete 10 years ago? It was mediocre when it was sold in 2005.

You will not be able to re-use your current memory to achieve 4 GB. You will need to find/purchase four 1 GB PC2 3200 sticks of memory - one for each slot. PC enthusiasts who don't like to throw away equipment may have some in a box somewhere - if you know anyone you could ask them and likely get them for free. You might be able to get them cheap from a computer repair shop if they happen to have any laying around. Otherwise, the well know online auction site offers a decent selection.

I did a Crucial Scan and it stated that the maximum memory was 4GB. I know the PC is old but I currently have it dual booted with Windows XP Home SP3 and Linux Peppermint so that I can learn about the Linux OS with the future goal of getting rid of windows for good. A problem that I am experiencing is that Firefox keeps crashing and I've been told that it might be due to a lack of available memory.

It could be that 2GB might do the trick vice 4GB. I'll have to look into that. Thanks for your reply.

I know that I will not be able to reuse the current memory. I did a CPUID CPU-Z and know that I will need to get DDR-400 (PC 3200) 184 pin, DIMM, 2.5V, CL=3 memory sticks. My motherboard (MS 7093 Ver 1.0) has 4 sockets, two blue and 2 black. The current memory is in the 2 blue sockets. I have dual channel capability. If I get a 2 X 2GB memory kit would I put the sticks in the 2 blue sockets or split them I.E. one stick in the first blue socket and the other in the first black socket?

I am not really sure if I need 4GB of memory to fix the problem I mentioned to USAFRet above. 2GB might do it but I figured that if I can put in 4GB, why not do it. If I find that I can get away with 2GB I'll try and get a 2 X 1GB memory kit. If that is the case I believe that I can put them in the blue sockets like the current 256MB sticks are located.

I got the computer at a big box store and it is all OEM. Therefore I don't have a motherboard manual to refer to. I have not been able to find a manual for the motherboard online, so that is why I am looking for answers on the forum. I am open to any suggestions.
