I have a 2TB HDD that is in great condition according to CrystalDiskInfo. However, Windows 10 runs very slow (3-5 min to startup). Almost no space is used on the hard drive (1.71tb free out of 1.8tb).

I was thinking of upgrading to an SSD, however 2TB ssds are way too expensive. I feel that if I get a 1tb or at least a 500gb, i'll be wasting the 2tb on the HDD.

The computer can only hold 1 hard drive. What should I do?

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

If you're on an HDD, without an SSD, the first thing you do is add an SSD to the system. It'll definitely breathe new life to your platform. Just an FYI, SSD's are bad as storage drives, so if you have any mission critical data on your HDD, back them up onto an external drive. SSD's can go poof at any time and with it, it'll take your data alongside.

The computer
Please list the specs to your build like so:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model. BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment of time.

Next, where are you located? What is your budget allocated for your storage purchase? Preferred site for purchase?

I have space for only one SATA drive, no NVME support. Also, I thought SSDs were way more reliable, and don't "just go poof"..
Anyways, here's my specs:

CPU: i5-7200U
CPU cooler: fan (laptop)
Motherboard: Inspiron 15 3567 laptop motherboard
RAM: 8GB DDR4
GPU: Intel iGPU
PSU: laptop battery
Chassis: laptop
OS: windows 10

Laptop is about 8 years old, BIOS is on version from 2022, and i'm in TX
Don't want to spend more than $100 on a SATA SSD, amazon preferred

The price differential between 250 gb, 500 gb, and 1 tb SSDs isn't much.

You are currently using .09 TB on your HDD.

That's about 90 GB. Less than most people. But I've never used more than 55 myself...to each his own.

Assuming you do not anticipate much growth in your occupied space on the drive, I'd get a 500 GB drive and be done with it. You could get a 250 GB, but that would save you very little money.

You are the world's best authority on how much space you need, both today and in the future. We can only guess.

Western Digital, Crucial, Samsung, etc. Standard 2.5 inch SATA.

Your startup times should decline to well under a minute; maybe under 30 seconds. Unless you have an antique CPU.

Right now, the Samsung 870 is priced at 57 for both the 250 and 500 gb models at Newegg. The 1 TB is 98.

I have a Dell XPS M1530 that I purchased new in 2006 with a HDD in it. In 2008 I put an SSD in it and it turned it into a whole new machine! It boots in like 25 seconds. It'll transform your life!
Ohh, and always get a larger drive than you think you need.

Get a 500GB ssd and if needed connect the hdd ext.
