Is Xeon E3-1230 v3 worth over i5 4690k? It will be my first time overclocking and i was hoping to get the core up to 4,2GHz. I want to either of them for my streaming gaming pc.

If you want to overclock you need the k edition CPU. It will be difficult/impossible to OC the Xeon. The only benefit the Xeon would have is that it supports ECC memory and some features useful for enterprises. For what you are doing, this would be worthless.

Idk thats up to you the xeon 1230 is basically an i7 3770 without integrated graphics so if you do video editing, rendering, etc. the xeon would probably be the best choice. If your strictly a gamer then an overcloked i5 will be better.

I had forgotten that the 1230 v3 does indeed have hyperthreading enabled. That does make it more like a slow i7.

You may want to look at whether or not your streaming software can take advantage of Intel QuickSync. While you won't need the integrated graphics, CPUs that lack them also lack quicksync.
