Okay so I have spent a few hours trying to find a solution for this confusing situation, I could just be being dumb. So I have an Asus Sabertooth 990FX r2.0, AMD FX-8350 and an Nvidia gtx 780, Now when I got my new gtx 780 recently I had upgraded from an AMD 6870 and since I was upgrading I decided to re-install windows 7.
After windows 7 was installed I used the motherboard disk to install the AMD chipset driver and also LAN driver for internet so I can download the lastest drivers for graphics, audio etc. After I was happy with everything and had a few games installed it was time to test my new graphics card in a game, So I try farcry 3 but find I was getting choppy 40 FPS and below on max settings but also changed the settings to the lowest with no change in FPS.
So I searched for solutions related to this issue and saw some mention that AMD drivers could be conflicting with my nvidia drivers, even though I did a re-install of windows 7 I thought I'd give it a check.
I installed driver sweeper, analsyed AMD - Display to find a list on there so I cleaned them, rebooted and ran farcry 3 again to find I was at 55+ FPS rarely dropping below at maxed settings and it was smooth. So I thought all was fine and they where somehow left on there maybe on my other partition.
But recently I have upgraded to Windows 8.1 all partitions unfortunatly had to be deleted, I installed the LAN and AMD chipset drivers from the motherboard driver disk again, but before anything I checked driver sweeper again only to find that AMD display drivers where on there again.
It seems when I install AMD chipset drivers from the motherboard disk it gives me display drivers, Now I don't know much about what chipset drivers are and I could be getting this all wrong but on driver sweeper there is no option for AMD - Chipset, there is intel - chipset, nvidia - chipset but only AMD - display which has files in when I install the chipset drivers.
So I decided to go ahead and download the 800mb odd latest chipset driver from the asus sabertooth 990fx r2.0 driver page, used driver sweeper to remove the files in AMD - Display, reboot and install the lastest driver only to find that when running the customise option for AMD install manager there is no chipset driver in there only the install manager software it's self and 2 optional files, There is no download for a windows 8.1 driver so I had to go with windows 8 driver.
Is there a need for the AMD chipset driver? Is the AMD install manager that I mentioned earlier actually what installs the driver, even though it's called install manager when I run the install, could it also install the chipset driver while I install the install manager? Am I just being dumb? If anyone can help me out or enlighten me in what I am getting wrong It will be greatly appreciated, Long winded I know but I had to describe it the way I've experienced it.
