Confusion about ASUS QVL

I'm considering an ASUS X99-M WS and am looking for compatible RAM. This mobo supports 64GB of DDR4 RAM. I'm using the QVL from the ASUS website and, while there are a few qualified sets of 64GB listed, they are all for 8x8GB sticks. The ASUS X99-M WS only has 4 memory slots! Obviously I would need 4x16GB sticks if I wanted to achieve max capacity. I am only left to assume that if I want to max out my RAM, ASUS will not support it. But why would they bother to list a set that could not even be installed onto the mobo? Likewise, the ASUS X99-E WS has 8 slots and supports 128GB, but the QVL does not even list a 64MB set for that board, much less a 128GB set.

I am probably what you would call a novice builder -- lots of Googling on my part with each build. So am I missing something here? Am I misunderstanding what it is I am looking at?

G.Skill have 64GB kits, but the QVL is limited to Z170 chipset motherboards: http://gskill.com/en/finder?cat=31&series=0&prop_2=64GB+%2816GBx4%29&prop_6=0&prop_3=0&prop_4=0&prop_1=0&prop_14=DDR4 If you check http://gskill.com/en/configurator?manu=29&chip=2276&model=2324 the ASUS X99-E WS is limited to 64 GB. Same at Corsair and other sites; therefore your motherboard should be limited to 32GB.

Thank you. I am still confused as to why the specs for the X99-M WS would say 64 GB RAM max. You are right about the X99-E WS, I don't know what I thought I was looking at when I said that it supported 128 GB. Well, now that I look at it again, the ASUS website says it does, but the Newegg site says otherwise.

Anyway, I think 32GB is enough for my purposes, I just wanted avoid having to buy an entire new set if I decided later I needed more.

In theory they support 16GB modules, but you could certainly contact G.Skill and ask if their Z170 modules would work in your motherboard.

i've been researching the X99-M WS mobo as i intend to upgrade to it here in the next month or so

saw the same dilemna with that G.SKILL F4-2800C15Q2-64GRK(XMP) 64GB ( 8x 8GB ) listing on the QVL, but couldn't understand why they would list it and not list a 32GB selection. I called into Asus support and while the tech was user friendly, he couldn't confirm to me that it was eligible for use in 32GB set up, he did he didn't think it would be a problem but that Asus hadn't tested it in that config.

a useless answer at best - i'm going to go with it anyway, as the clock frequency & price point were at a sweet spot for me
