Confusion over ATX 2.0

From what I understand the ATX 2.0 standard provides a 24 pin power connector for the motherboard instead of a 20-pin connecter. I have a motherboard with a 20 pin connector and the auxiliary 4 pin connector. Will an ATX 2.0 PSU work with my current motherboard? I have read a review of an ATX 2.0 PSU that says it is backwards compatible. How is it backward compatible?

Thank you.

People keep saying ATX 2.0 this and that about 24-pin connectors, I always thought ATX 2.0 (or was it 2.1?) simply meant it had an ATX12v connector, and that 24-pin was designated "EPS" rather than "ATX".

ATX 2.0 adopted the 24 pin SSI/EPS connector, and also added requirements for SATA connectors(not part of ATX standard previously), and add some more stringent requirements for output, output per rail, something along those lines.

Believe ATX 1.2 or 1.3 was when they added the ATX 12V connector.

ATX 2.0 was just introduced rather recently(last few months anyway), or at least, that's when ATX 2.0 PSU's started hitting the shelf.
