I have a netgear wndr3700av dual band router but it's 2.4ghz mode is not working due to hardware problem. I am thinking to buy a relatively cheap 2.4 ghz router and connect to the netgear router. I am wondering if that is going to work or shall I need to buy a new dual band router because I have many devices at home which does not work on 5ghz.

It depends on the money you want to spend. There is not a huge difference in price between 2.4 and the mid grade dual band routers.

In any case you can just use the new router as a AP and connect it to your current router. It is a wireless switch rather than a router in effect. Only concern would be if you buy a dual band router and place it near the main one make sure you select different channels for the 5g...and the 2.4 if it worked to avoid interference.
