Connect 2 displays to a laptop

My laptop is HP Pavilion dv6-7025tx Entertainment Notebook PC on Windows 10. I plan to buy an external monitor HP 22es (FHD monitor), which has HDMI and VGA input. I am presently using a second monitor connected to the VGA port of the notebook.

Can I connect the FHD monitor to the HDMI port, keep the second monitor on the VGA port and close the notebook's lid. Will this work as extended displays?

Usually when using external monitors connected to a laptop a docking station is needed to power up and use two external monitors.

Thank you, t53186, for your prompt reply. This is the solution, but I'm afraid the docking stations prices are about the price of the monitor; the cheaper ones either do not have a VGA port or they require Thunderbolt or USB-C port neither of which are on my laptop.
