Connect SIM card to computer - basically want to use my laptop as a "super large not-so-mobile phone" :)

Really not sure where to put this, so forgive me if this isn't the ideal location.

I sometimes don't get all the fuss about smartphones. Ok, maybe my situation is a bit special since I hardly need to travel around and in general working with anything other than a full-scale laptop or desktop drives me crazy because of how less efficiently I work from, say a tablet or smartphone.

What I'd really love and immediately shell out money for is when they invent a painless way to simply buy a SIM card, pay for basic service and stick the SIM card into your computer. I can't stand working without a mouse and keyboard. All these touchscreen apps just are not efficient for me, a pertinent example is that I can type much faster than I can text. My computer runs faster than any phone I have ever owned or probably will ever own. Right-clicking and that sort of stuff on these smart devices often requires pressing and maintaining contact for a second or two. Not much for the average user, perhaps, but these things add up over time. Nothing, absolutely nothing about smartphones is appealing enough for me to make the investment.

My problem is that certain apps are only designed for Android/iOS and therefore it isn't easy to use them with a PC. When will this change?

The point of this post is to appeal to any of you out there who know of good ways to connect SIM cards to computers. Haha, preferably without having to invest in the darn smartphone in the first place. I currently live and work in the same building. Spend most of my time confined to this space with great wifi access. When I do go out, it's to play sports, or do essential shopping and I tend to leave my phone behind anyway. It bothers me that I am sitting in front of large monitor every day, backed up by much a much more powerful processor, graphics and whatnot, and the trend these days is to "force" these mini devices on us. Oh please, help me find a way to avoid this so-called revolution.

A smart phone really isn't for me.

Best case scenario - ability to directly use SIM with powerful computer without needing a smartphone.

Thanks for reading and I look forward to either discussion or potential solutions.

Why hasn't someone made a computer that can directly connect a SIM card and can run Android or something like that as well as Windows? If tablets can directly "accept" SIM cards, why oh why can't the most basic of laptops do it? Is it just a marketing ploy to force us to buy more products?

Sigh. 🙁

You can't use a laptop as a full cell phone, but there are laptops that you can use the data plan with a SIM card to access the internet. Then you can use Skype or Magic Jack or something to call from the computer.

You can connect a keyboard and a mouse to your recent Android smartphone. And you can send SMS messages from your computer.

But even if it was possible to connect a SIM to a computer - what you would use it for? You can run Android emulator on a PC, and emulate a smartphone, but what is the point?

Thanks for the replies.

The point is that mobility isn't really all that attractive to me. I am extremely heavy on texting, and it would be a million times better if I could use my regular keyboard to type texts. It would also be so much more convenient to use a mouse to sort through contacts, text lists, for selecting specific texts for deletion or archiving etc. Also I'm an all-in-one kind of person. I don't see extreme benefits in having a smart TV, a smartphone, a tablet, a smartwatch as well as a laptop. A powerful laptop can cover all of my business, personal and entertainment needs. I hate to shell out additional money for something that another one of my devices should already be able to perform.

I'm also big on efficiency. Since I don't have a pressing need to be connected and work when I am outside the office, a smartphone isn't all that appealing. Also, it's about time management as well. Most tasks are just so much slower when I perform them on a smartphone. So, even in the extremely rare case when I would like to work from outside of the office, I'd rather wait until I'm back indoors and spend 5 minutes to complete a task that might otherwise take me 20 minutes to complete on my smartphone.

Hope that clears things up a bit.

I'm willing to bet there is a sizable market out there for people who would love to use their laptops as oversized smartphones. In some ways can't a tablet be considered to be a larger smartphone? So why not take things up a notch and convert your laptop into the smartphone. Haha, also I'm the kind of person that can't stand using the mousepad on my laptop either (again all about efficiency), as why would I want to spend 10 minutes to complete something that I can achieve in two with access to a mouse etc? 😛

Texting (as SMS message, sent over celluar network) is not something I would consider "business-critical" application, so "sizable market" is everything but. And as said, you can get SMS app for your laptop, if this is what your life depends on.

Texting is just one aspect.

As for the market, there are definitely a lot of people who would appreciate, and more importantly be willing to pay for, the ability to "plug and play" with respect to a SIM card being able to be directly connected with a computer. If not, why would things like Bluestacks have millions of users?
