Had an old dlink router laying around that I wanted to use for better wifi upstairs. So I configured it as access point, which seemed to work. I can't however connect my PC to it with an internet cable (I want wired internet for my PC). Is this impossible?

OK. Then start with a new cable. Is your PC set to DHCP or static IP?
Open a command window (cmd.exe) and run ipconfig /all on your PC. Post the output.

Possible the unit is failing - I would give the unit a full once-over by giving it a hard reset, then seeing if the router works as a normal router (wifi + ethernet check) then see if there are any firmware updates and install them. Then do the AP setup and see how it fares again.
