I have no port number - just a blank space on the appropriate form on screen - so can't connect to the internet, although my Dell Inspiron PC (running Vista) actually IS connected by wifi ..... so how can I know what to enter in the box when a port number is required?

You shouldn´t have to enter port numbers manually?

Can you upload some pictures or such so we can understand you better?

Sounds like you are connected to the router through wifi but the router itself has some trouble conneting to internet?

How old is your router?

Thanks for your suggestion Fyllehund but I know that the router and connections are sound because other computers in the same room are working perfectly. The Dell computer is definitely connected to the internet because the app showing the local temperature flashes on with a correct reading before becoming 'unobtainable'. I'm beginning to think that maybe it's a virus causing the problem. My Avira virus checker doesn't think there are any on board , but then it hasn't been able to update itself since this problem arose.

Try searching your comp with malwarebytes instead, a very good program. malwarebytes.org
You´ll probobly find some with that when anti virus programs wont.

I would love to do that Fyllehund .... I can't download Malwarebytes though because of the original problem. I looked at their website but I didn't see the opportunity to buy the programme in disk form. Thanks for your advice however, and if I ever get the Dell fixed, I'll certainly download that programme.
