Connecting 2 external monitors via a display port (display port/hdmi converter)?

Hello,
I have a HP Elitebook 2570p (core i5-3320M), Intel HD4000 and 12 GB RAM. I am trying to connect two Full HD Samsung monitors to my laptop mainly for working on doucments (ideally I would like to use the full resolution if possible for image processing).
I bought usb3 to hdmi connector which unfortunately did not work. I am thinking about using a hdmi splitter. Unfortunately, I only have a Displayport and a VGA connector.

Should I try the following option:
1.Connect a Displayport to HDMI adapter (so this should give me a HDMI port)
2. Get a HDMI splitter and connect both Full HD monitors.

Is this likely to work?

Many thanks for your help and time.

I would think that you need a VGA to HDMI cable for Monitor 1.

And a Displayport to HDMI cable for Monitor 2.

Some other cable with a plug adapter on one end or the other may be viable. Just need to be sure that the correct conversion is actually being made versus just the plug physically fitting into the corresponding plug or port.

You should be able to right-click on an open area of your laptop's desktop to access the applicable Control Panel and/or Display settings.

Not sure about the Intel Support Page as a reference per se. HP may have set up something else within the Elitebook. E.g., Control Panel may be aware three video output options (ports) but only two
Do you want duplicate screens or extended screens?

Press "WIN" + "P" keys on your notebook to see and understand the options involved.

If duplicate one available video output port can go through a splitter and thus serve both monitors. Both monitors would always have the same image.

If extended then you will need connections and adapters to independently connect each monitor to different video ports (display port and VGA) on your Elitebook.

I.e., the Elitebook's display port would serve one monitor and the VGA port would serve the other monitor. Becomes a matter of comparing the ports on the Elitebook to the ports on the Samsung monitors. Both fully HDMI capable as I read your post.

Then purchase the necessary cables or adapters to make the connections. However, you may run into some resolution limit - especially with respect to the VGA side.

Many thanks for your reply.

Monitor 1 has a VGA connection port as well as a HDMI.
Monitor 2 has a Displayport and a HDMI connection.

Elitebook 2570p has Windows 7 pro (64 bit installed)

Trying to use the extended mode. On the Intel support page (HD4000) it says that 3 displays can be used in certain combinations (this one applies to my laptop: built-in-display, VGA and Displayport). Perhaps this only applies to mirror-mode as I could not get the extended display.
So my setup was: Monitor 1 (VGA port on laptop), Monitor 2 (Displayport on laptop). Display in the control panel recognises all three displays but one of the monitors says "no signal and there is no display". (Both monitors are functional if connected one at a time).

OPTION 1
Diplayport to a HDMI converter
Connecting a HDMI splitter

OPTION 2
USB to VGA adapter (says it can handle 1920 x 1080p) (For Monitor 1) although my laptop has a VGA connection
Monitor 2 connected via Displayport

I would appreciate any advice on which adapters should I look for to use the monitors in an extended mode?
