Connecting 2 routers remotely from 2 countries for internet redirection.

Both Routers are high end asus RT ax 88U

Hello

I was wondering if it's possibly to connect 2 routers remotely.

One is based in UK
and the other one based in Singapore.

In UK I have VM Fibre I think 220mbits
In Singapore 500Mbits

Essentially loads of contents are blocked in Sing ( Contents Geo location stuffs).

As I am keeping my internet connection active in UK, I was wondering if I connect to it via another router.

I forget what exact features asus has in the base code I always load merlin images on my asus routers. Merlin images used to have much better vpn support but asus has merged most the really nice features into the base code lately.

It is actually pretty simple you run a vpn server on the router in the UK and a VPN client on the one in Singapore. You can run the reverse but it makes it more complex.

The first major problem is you must have a public IP. It does not have to be fixed or static but it must be public. Generally the simplest way to tell is if the IP you see on the router WAN is the same as a site like whatsmyip it means the ip is public.

You need a public IP so you know the IP of your router, when the IP are private...

You need a public IP so you know the IP of your router, when the IP are private it means you share the public IP. It is best if the public IP is in the UK where you want to run the server function. The one in singapore does not have to be public.

The next concern would be the upload speed of the connection in the UK. This will be the maximum download speed you can expect on the signapore end.

Although a little slower you want to use OPENVPN rather than something like IPSEC for the vpn. The asus supports both but openvpn appears to be HTTPS traffic so is not blocked as much. The routers you have have a cpu chip with a vpn accelerator so you should get good performance. How much it helps is based on the encryption methods, I forget the details.

Hello

Thank you for your response. I am so sorry about the late thank you.

I did some further research. As both routers are identical, one can be used as VPN server and the other one as client as you suggested, The credentials from VPN server can be exported too. :). I am not very techie savvy.

My IP address is static. Virgin Media fibre is static in UK.

Apparently even if ISP changes IP address, the asus router offers something dyndns.

Once again thank you.

Happy New Year.
