Im trying to use a 144 hz monitor connected via hdmi to my laptop. My laptop is ASUS TUF Gaming Laptop, 15.6” 120Hz Full HD IPS-Type, AMD Ryzen 7 R7-3750H, GeForce GTX 1650, 8GB DDR4, 512GB PCIe SSD, Gigabit Wi-Fi 5, Windows 10 Home, FX505DT-EB73. The monitor is ASUS VG248QZ 24” Gaming Monitor 144Hz Full HD 1080p 1ms DP HDMI DVI Eye Care. The monitor is only going to 60 hz with an hdmi cable right now. Is it possible to get a better hdmi like a 2.0? Thanks

Some monitors, like the ASUS VG248QZ have limited bandwidth over HDMI 1.4 , maxing out at 60Hz.

Just because a laptop display supports 120 Hz refresh rate, it does not mean that it will support that refresh rate with a external monitor, specially over HDMI.
Your Laptop has a HDMI 1.4 port, and it will support 1.4 standard even if you connect a HDMI cable that supports HDMI 2.0. getting a better cable won't do any good.

By the way a HDMI 1.4 port is enough for 144Hz at 1080p, however that has to be include by both the laptop and monitor manufacturers.

Is it possible to use an hdmi to display port or dvi?

First you need to find out if your laptop can output 120Hz over the HDMI port.
Then you will have to buy a expensive active HDMI to DisplayPort Adapter...like this one below.
A regular passive adapter won't do.

So because of my monitor theres absolutely no way I can achieve 144 hz without spending a ton on the HDMI to DP Adapter. Btw if theres any way to achieve just 120 hz thats fine also.

I don't think the ASUS TUF Gaming Laptop or your ASUS VG248QZ monitor can support more than 60Hz at 1080p over HDMI (1.4).
Your ASUS VG248QZ display supports 120Hz and 144Hz over DVI and DP only.

If your laptop supports HDMI 2.0, there is a possibility that could output 144 Hz if it was fitted that way by the manufacturer.
Still you will need an active HDMI to DisplayPort Adapter or active HDMI to DL-DVI Adapter to get 120 Hz or 144 Hz on the ASUS VG248QZ monitor.
So I should get an active HDMI to Display port and a Display port?
