Connecting a desktop through ethernet to laptop on wifi, internet very slow

Here's my setup:

windows 10 desktop without wifi card
windows 10 laptop connected to wifi

I currently use an ethernet cable to successfully share the wifi to the desktop. There is internet access but it is very slow, the laptop can run ~60Mbps while the desktop is less than 0.5Mbps, the ipconfig looks alright to me. I'm not sure where to start with troubleshooting why its so slow.

Any advice would be appreciated, cheers.

reinstall the ethernet drivers on both systems
maybe the laptop is downloading something like an update?

is the lan cable good?`cat 5 or better?

at which speed are both connected? 10Mbit or 100Mbit or 1000Mbit/1Gbit?
