I have my pc and my NAS right next to each other and running an ethernet cable to my router is a pain in the rear considering where both machines are located.

is it possible to run a shorter ethernet cable from my NAS to my PC. I'm not super networking savvy or really familiar with Free NAS OS. But I built ther NAS myself and installed the free NAS OS myself so I'm not entirely incompetent with networking.

This is rally a matter of convenience not practicallity.

Thanks,
Harrison

it is possible but a bit complicated.
from a hardware side you'll need a crossover network cable instead of a normal flylead between the two systems and obviously a spare network port on your pc.

For the two systems to talk to each other, you'll either need to turn on internet connection sharing on you pc so that it assigns an ip address to the NAS, or you'll need to give the NAS and the network interface on your pc its connecting to IP addresses. Internet connection sharing will probably be the easiest.

So in other words it's totally not worth it. I'm not putting a network card into my pc, when I have 2 cards in crossfire. I was really hoping it was easier.

Thanks,
Harry

Then perhaps you can put a small hub next to your pc?
google "4 port ethernet hub"
You can use that to split your one network connection
