connecting Dell PC to Sanyo tv for video viewing

Have connected HDMI to both CPU and TV. only see computer wallpaper on TV, but no icons etc. TV will not show video that is playing on computer. Is there something I'm missing? Do I need to change something in settings or control panel? What do I do, and if there is some little setting to change, where do I find that? Thanks in advance.

If you are using Windows 7 you can try the following:
1) Right click on the desktop
2) Click on Personalize
3) Click on Display (lower left corner)
4) Click on Change display settings (on the left side)
5) Under Multiple Displays choose Duplicate these displays
6) Click on OK
7) Exit by clicking on the X in the upper right corner.

That should work. Let me know if I missed a step somewhere and I will correct it.
