Hi, I have a custom built PC with these specs:

Cool Master Mid Tower
Gigabyte GA - F2A68HM-H Motherboard
AMD A10 7860k Processor
Thermal Master TM-500-PSSR-M3 500w PSU
Integrated Radeon R7 graphics

So I bought a EVGA GTX 1060 FTW, it fits and everything but the issue is with the cables. The gpu has an 8pin 4x4 slot and its comes with an 8 pin connector and two 6 pin 3x3 connectors towards the PSU. However I searched the entire system and I have nothing to connect to the GPU. There is a 4pin 2x2 CPU cable sitting idle and a 4 pin 2x2 vga cable. The vga cable seems to fit into one of the 6pin connectors (leaving 2 pin spots open). Can I run the PC by connecting the vga cable to one of the two 6 pin adapters that came with the GPU. What can I do in this situation.

Thanks

Psu's come with exact cables for a reason. If the psu does not have the necessary connector for the gpu, it wasn't designed to power that gpu. No matter what the manufacturer claims as to the unit being 500w, reality is that most of that wattage is from the 3.3v and 5v rails, and in modern pc's, the 12v rail is by far the most commonly used. With the apparent connectors for gpu on that psu, it's a 300w unit at best, not 500w as claimed. Minimum recommendation for a gtx1060 is 430w, and thats from a decent psu, not a piece of junk knockoff.

You'll need to replace the psu, this would be my recommendation.

the 2x4 pin is for cpu

you must have a 6+2 or 6 pin only power cable for pci express

if you don't find a 6+2 power cable, you need a new psu

you can't use the 6 pins only, the gpu asks for more watts, the 6 pins will not deliver and system will not work properly, or work at all, new psu is required for this gpu

a good corsair, evga or any other of the big brands will come with at least 2 6+2 power cables

need a new power supply

your setup is also not good enough to properly use that 1060

Yeah, he needs a new power supply. His APU has a base clock of 3.6. It can reach 4.0 if temps are good. Not the worst set up but it should keep him in the game. Coming from an integrated r7 GPU chip, he is going to see a whirlwind of better computer enjoyment.
