Connecting local network to laptop

Hello guys,
I have been provided with a PC by my organization which is connected to lan which gives me Internet aswell. Now I want to use the Internet on my laptop at the couch at my own comfort level. So, can I buy modem and plug the lan wire into it or will I need to do something else for it to work ?

By 'at the couch' do you mean at home? You'd need to have internet service at home, or talk to your neighbors about using their wifi signal.
