Connecting Msi Gtx 980 to power supply

Hi all,

I'm a newcomer to building pcs and I've been having a bunch of problems but right now I just got my pc to boot to the Bios without the graphics card in or the optical drive attached, so I i just had cpu, cooler, 1 stick of ram and a ssd hooked up. Now I want to install the graphics card and the optical drive.
But I'm a little nervous since I've gotten the build to bios before on just the barebones and even managed to install windows eight but each time I've plugged in the graphics card I haven't been able to post and have had to do a complete rebuild.
I think there's a chance I might be powering the graphics card wrong and would love some input.
I'm using an EVGA supernova 850 g2 and an MSI GTX 980 gaming 4G. The graphics card came with a 6 pin to 8 pin adapter and the power supply came with a VGA cable that was what I think is called a 6+2 pin cable that also had an additional 6 pin piece splitting off the 6+2.
I had been putting the 6 pin to 8 pin adapter on the 6 pin piece and plugging the 6+2 and the 6-8 adapter into the two 8 pin ports in the graphics card.
Should I be using two VGA cables instead?

The 6+2 pin cable appears to have a pentagon shaped piece where it should have a square piece if you know what I mean, I can post pics and additional information on my build if helpful.

What are you talking about VGA cables in a PSU? A VGA cable is a display port and the PSU is a Power Supply Unit. These are two TOTALLY different things. Are you trying to refer to the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit)? If so, that only the chip on the graphics card.

Regardless, the have the same PSU and this unit comes with the cables required for two (2) 8-pin connections (4 x 6+2 Pin PCI-E). If your card requires two (2) 8-pin connections, that is what it needs. The 6+2 power cables should be used together in the same 8-pin power slot on the graphics card. Anything else simply will not work.

Sorry if I was unclear, the PSU included cables labelled VGA, in the PSU manual they're referred to as PCI-E VGA cables.
There is one "6+2 pin + 6 pin PCI-VGA cable" and included with the GPU is an adapter which goes from 6 pin to 8 pin, I am wondering if I should use attach the adapter to the 6 pin part of the "6+2 pin + 6 pin PCI-VGA cable" and plug the two parts of that into the GPU's 2x8 pin ports, or if I should use two of the "6+2 pin PCI-E VGA cables" to connect the PSU to the GPU.

Hello there! Not sure if this tread is still alive but I'll try posting my question here.

So I have exactly the same PSU with the same gpu.
Just to make sure I got everything right, you used two output on the PSU to power the gpu? So this mean that you have two dangling 6 pin connector from your gpu?

You didn't use the included adaptor 6 pin to 8 pin?
