Connecting old pata hdd to new build...

Just finished new build (noob here) and I'm trying to get the files off my old Samsung HD300LD. New build uses Asrock Extreme 4, I7 3770k, and Samsung 840 Pro 256 SSD as boot drive. I would like to get old files off HDD or preferably use old HDD as a secondary storage drive. The HDD has old OS and all of my old files on it and it uses the 40 pin pata ribbon connection that I don't beleive is supported by my ASRock Extreme 4. Any help would be appreciated.

Don't worry about the old OS, when connected as a secondary HDD you should be able to browse through all the files as a storage drive.

You could buy an external USB attached ide enclosure like this:

That might be good to take off files, but not good for normal use.

Or, you can buy a pci IDE controller card and install your drive permanently in your case:

So far of these two options, which would be better. I would like to use the HDD as a storage drive but really my main concern is accessing my old files. Thanks again.

If there is room in the case to have the adapter coming off the back of the drive and you have only the 1 drive, I would go with the adapter. No drivers to worry about, just plug and play.

Your links do not work for me.
IDE drives are slow, and are no longer likely to be reliable.
Once you get your data off of the drive, I would abandon it.
But, if you really want to regularly use the drive I would use the pci IDE controller approach

Yeah, I will probably just transfer the data to my external drive and then get a new drive to serve as storage. Thankyou.
