Connecting one hard drive & one cd-writer with 2 different IDE cable

Hello, i have one maxtor 40gig hard drive and one cd-writer, how can i connect these devises with 2 different IDE cables? which must be master and which must be slave?
now i have connected my hard in maxtor and my cd-writer in slave but my system show error that the hard drive is disabled !! thank you for helping me

If each is on it's own cable then each should be a master. Also, make sure you use the END connection and not the middle connection when you have just one drive attached to a cable.
