connecting sata 3.5" to laptop directly

can i connect my desktop hard disk 3.5" to my laptop..
they both seems to be having same sata cable port ..
can i plug the cable's 1 end in my laptop's hard disk port and one in my desktop hard disk , by powering it through the smps?
i got no working desktop(motherboard fried )

and i know about the caddy/adapter ,, JUST WANT TO KNOW , IS IT POSSIBLE TO DO THE WAY I JUST DESCRIBED??

It's better to buy a proper converter which will give you mains electric power and a USB data cable. They usually sell one-Bay quite cheaply.

SATA is compatible, the only thing I would worry is whether the laptop's power connector is able to deliver enough power for a desktop drive. Or do what Saga says, make it into a proper external drive.

I have tried laptop power and haven't made it work on one yet. I usually end up putting a PSU on the side of the desk just to use a supply for the slave disk.
