Connecting TV, soundplate and surround system

I want to connect a Phillips 5.1 surround sound system to my LG soundplate, so I can remove the speakers. The soundplate has optical only, The TV has hdmi and optical and the phillips system has optical and hdmi.

I connected the soundplate to the tv via optical, then the phillips system to the tv via hdmi but no sound from the DVD when I play it or the radio. Any suggestions please???

Probably the Philips will not send audio out since they assume you want the sound to come out of its' speakers. The optical is an input and the HDMI is video output only. You could get a standalone DVD and just use the Philips for the radio.

Thanks, I was trying to de-clutter by getting rid of speakers.....I now assume a soundplate/bar is just for the TV
