Hi, I'm looking for some help about a wireless networking problem I'm having. Basically when I'm in my living room, the wireless signal is too low because my router is at the total other side of my house, so my Dad bought a Cisco Wireless Network Extender from Maplins. The typical layout of the rooms where I commonly use my laptop in are like this:

Key:

B Bedroom
R Router
D Dining Room
WE Wireless Extender
L Living Room

B --- R --- D --- WE --- L

Now when I'm in B, my laptop connects directly to R. When I'm in L, my laptop connects to WE (I can tell because the signal strength is full). However when I'm in D, my laptop cannot connect to the network or the internet properly. The signal strength bar on my laptop gets a yellow ! mark and says Limited Access.

Also sometimes when I walk from B to L with my laptop, the problem occurs then too. My guess is that both signals from the router and the extender are conflicting - or something along that line?

Is this a common problem with wireless extenders? Could it have been setup incorrectly? We have re-setup the extender three times to try and resolve the problem but no luck so far. Any suggestions or tips? Thank you in advance!

It may be that you need to change the radio channels, try the different non-overlapping channels (from 1, 6, and 11). Also the extender will work better if you use it as an AP and attach an Ethernet cable from the router to the extender.

Consumer extenders (and APs) are not very good at working seamlessly, just walking past several of them and switching device automatically, as they are not made for that purpose like commercial units.
