I switched over from RR to centurytel DSL advertised 768/256 - act
637/-214. I am running a Westell 6100 modem in bridged mode to a Linksys
Etherfast router BEFSR41 V3 Firmware Version: 1.05.00 . I have MTU set
correctly. (1492). With the bridge mode enabled the Westell DSL modem the
firewall and DNS that is built in is bypassed. Although I turned it off
anyways. When gaming, particularly Q3, I get major spikes on my ups when
another computer on the network is web browsing. I ran all the tests on DSL
reports and installed a new line right to the telco's box outside.
Everything seems fine. Both of these are XP machines and it also happened
when a friend came over to LAN. Although it was his computer that lagged
while I was browsing. I didn't have this problem with roadrunner. And the
speed tests were pretty similar. I have been trying to fix this for a week
now. Any suggestions? I really like my new pings and don't want to go back
to RR, so I really need to solve this. Is there anyway to cap the bandwidth
to the other computer? Or to limit the traffic on port 80 while gaming?
Thanks in advance.

I've had similar problems where one connection was shared by five to
six people. When someone was browsing (especially when opening a new
site) the in-game ping of the others went through the roof!

We solved it by setting up a Linux box as a dedicated router and
giving every connected PC a guaranteed upload/download of at least
20KB/s (kilobytes, not kilobits). Quake 3 has been running smoothly
ever since.

I don't know the router you're using but if you need help in setting
up a dedicated router, I can perhaps be of some assistance.

I'd advice you to use Mandrake Linux as it's the distribution which is
easiest to install (in the opinion of this mere mortal anyway, no
flames please 😉).

Your bandwidth is choking. Can even happen on 3 meg connections. You are
saturating the pipeline. Only easy cure is to not surf when playing. Or
setup of a traffic shaping router or server.
