Connector Labeled P9

Gateway is sending me a new power supply that I will install when it
arrives.

When I spoke to them on the phone and unplugged cables that came from the
power supply to determine what the problem was, there was a cable that
didn't seem to be connected to anything. It is a white connector labeled P9
and is square in shape with 4 female openings. The technician had me plug it
into the motherboard to verify that the motherboard was not the problem.

I am not sure if it was connected when I opened the case and he couldn't
tell me if it was.

Can you tell me what that connector is and if I should reconnect it? Or is
it just for testing the motherboard? I labeled all of the other ones and I
know where they go.

Thanks, Allen

Is this a P4 system, or a PIII or Athlon (the ATX12V connector you're
describing is used mostly with P4 systems).

It's a 700XL system = P4.

http://www.hardwarebook.net/connector/power/atx12v.html

http://support.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/cs-009013.htm
states:

Power Supply Requirements
Chassis for platforms based on the Pentium® 4 processor must have
either an ATX12V or SFX12V ?power supply. We encourage integrators using ATX
form-factor desktop boards to choose a chassis that complies with the ATX
2.01 (or later) specification. Integrators using microATX form-factor
desktop boards should choose a chassis that complies with the microATX 1.0
(or later) specification.

Power Supply
ATX12V and SFX12V ?power supplies differs from previous ATX and SFX
power supplies. Both the ATX12V and SFX12V power supplies provide additional
12V processor current via a 2x2 pin connector that is required for proper
operation.
