I just set up a new router. (Linksys E2500). All devices connect to the router but don't have internet. After disconnecting and reconnecting about 10 to 20 times on each device (several tabs, smartphones and PCs) it works. But it is a pain having to that every time anyone wants to use it. Any ideas?

thanks but I bought and set up the router myself don't think they will help me.

Most ISP's will work with you on a self purchased modem/router. I know the ones around where I live always do.

The internet providers here aren't that great and won't help me. Any other ideas?

Does the router get an IP address from your internet provider? If your router doesn't pull an IP address, domain server, dns server info from you ISP it may be a problem on their end. (Or you forgot to pay your bill like I did this month)

You can test if something is wrong with your router by plugging a computer directly to the Ethernet port on your modem. If the computer connects to internet (sometimes it takes a few minutes) directly then there might be something wrong (or misconfigured) with the router.

Also I recently had trouble with a new comcast connection. It would take an hour for my router to get an IP address from comcast and everything would look like it was working. Connected computers thought they had internet access but I couldn't connect to any web sites. I ended having to disable the SPI firewall on the router (I'm not really happy about it but you do what it takes) to get everything to work.

Very often, the ISP just needs to recognize the router MAC address.
Call them and see what they say.

"Hi, ISP guy. I got a new router. Can you authorize it?"

Connecting the router straight to my computer works fine. The router will work after reconnecting and disconnecting 10 to 20 times. It is usable but annoying.

I was talking about plugging the computer into the modem not the router. Unless yours is a single combined unit then this step provides no additionally information.

Sorry I meant plugging it in the modem works fine.

It does work sometimes after reconnecting and disconnecting 10-20 times so I don't think that's the issue. Let me know if you have any other ideas?

If it was just a router setting it would never work. If it was the ISP then it would be the same for the computer direct to the modem. The intermittent nature of you problem would suggest that your router is a dud. I assume it's just out of the warranty? But that could be that I'm not smart enough and out of ideas.

I also know the sick felling thinking something is broken, buying a replacement and then finding out that it wasn't broken after all.

I will try to reset the router and see if that works. If not, I guess I'll have to buy a new one. Thanks for your help!!
